Application and partnership process:

  • Applicant attends Habitat for Humanity of Denton County Application Meeting (receives application during meeting)
  • Applicant turns in the completed application at assigned time
  • Habitat Family Selection Committee reviews applications and meets with qualified applicants
  • Habitat makes application decisions within 60 days
  • Accepted families must attend New Partner Family Orientation to begin sweat equity and sign letter of intent
  • After 200 hours (for singe adult family)/250 hours (for a 2 adult family) sweat equity have been completed, family is placed on list to obtain a lot for their Habitat home (typically 6-9 months)
  • Family works with Habitat for Humanity of Denton County staff to determine plans for house and waits for construction start date (typically 3-6 months)
  • House built (12-14 weeks is typical)

    The entire process from turning in an application to moving into a Habitat for Humanity house, typically takes between 12-24 months.

Top 10 Things You Can Do to Prepare for Applying:

  1. Collect and save W-2 statements from all employers for the past two years. (2006 & 2007)
  2. Collect and save tax returns with all schedules for the past two years. (2006 & 2007) Request transcripts for free by calling 1-800-829-1040.
  3. Collect proof of income for the following items: SSI, Child Support, Food Stamps, Alimony, etc.
  4. Save your pay stubs. These will be required for up to two months when you apply.
  5. Save your bank statements for all accounts (checking and/or savings). These will be required for two months when you apply.
  6. Gather complete addresses and telephone numbers for:
    • landlord
    • employers for the past two years
    • banks where you have accounts
    • creditors that you are paying
  7. If applicable, gather copies of all bankruptcy papers and/or divorce or separation papers.
  8. Be sure you have a photo ID and a Social Security Card.
  9. Start working on debts on your credit report. You can get your free credit report by going to www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-322-8228. Be sure to clear any judgments.
  10. Think positively; even if you don't get accepted this year you can always apply the following year!
